Did you know each other in college?
J: |
I met Timmy briefly my freshman year. I don't really remember how or why, but all I remember is that he wore a beanie. Through out college, Timmy would occassional drop by my room and scare the crap outta me. I think he thought it was pretty cute to do so. During my senior year I often went up to Chicago to visit. Everytime I was at Timmy's place, he'd just close the door and go to sleep. I would even leave nice thank you notes for him and his roommate when I left, but never did I get a acknowledgement from Timmy. |

Sure. I remember meeting Joy during my sophomore year. It was at Allen Hall and when I met her, I got the impression that she thought I was weird. We didn't hang out together all that much, but I do remember once I gave her a ride home on my motor scooter, but a cop pulled us over because she didn't have protective eyewear. So I had to let her off my scooter so she could walk home by herself. |
What have you been up to since college?
J: |
After college, I moved back home to Houston for a couple of years. During that time, Timmy was in Houston from time to time for work. One time he insisted that I try raw oysters and took me to eat some. I took one taste and promptly spit out the oyster into a napkin. I never let Timmy choose where we'd eat from that day forward. Then I moved to DC for a year, before relocating to my current location, New York City, where I teach a handful of cute kids how to read and write. It is my favorite job ever. |

After graduating, I lived and worked in Chicago for a few years. I remember Joy used to visit and crash at our apartment a lot. And then she would make homemade thank you cards and forget to give them to me. Anyhow, I eventually moved out to San Francisco and that's where I am now. I often times miss Chicago (I have lots of Chicago photography around my apartment), but I also love California, especially the weather. |
Our Story
When did you first notice the other?
J: |
At the end of TAF one year, Timmy went up during a Sunday service to share about his heart for the youth at TAF. I remember thinking to myself, "wow, he really has grown a lot since moving out to SF. SF has done him some good." He even made his momma cry. That was when I first noticed that boy. |

During Bryan and Mary's wedding, Joy sprinkled some pixie dust on me and I started taking notice of her. And since we both stood in that wedding, I noticed that she looked pretty good on my arm as we walked down the aisle together :) But for real, I didn't really notice her until after she moved out to NY and I moved to SF. It was then that we actually started talking more and I realized how good of a fit we could be for each other. |
How did your relationship start?
J: |
We'd keep in touch and play connect four all the time via e-mail. I would always beat him. When I moved to NYC, my job would completely tire me out. Timmy would call me on his way home everyday to check up on me. He even sent me a care package once because he thought I had the worst nutritional diet ever, and filled it with his favorite snacks for me to eat. One time he also sent me mace because he thought it was dangerous to walk home alone. That was the start of it all. |
T: |
It started when Joy was in NY and I would check up on her often to make sure she was doing okay through her crazy teaching experiences, but nothing sparked for a while. I never saw it happening. I mean, I never ever imagined actually marrying someone named "Joy". But the more I'd keep in touch with her and keep her in my prayers, the more I realized how well we complement each other. Even moreso, I felt God was really leading us together. So one day I called her up, told her how I felt and what I was thinking, and asked if she would pray about it. She told me she had already started praying about it. And that was when I was like - awwwwh shoot. |
How did he propose?
J: |
Down on one knee :) |
T: |
Yea, and somehow she was still lower than me because she was sitting on the floor. (Click for the full story) |
